Mark and I had an opportunity to fish the famous 'Bassmaster Tournament' Kerr
Lake
in North Carolina this weekend but passed due to conflicts (thank you Dan Betz
for
the offer). So we had to fish at some point this weekend. If
you are a resident of
Anne Arundel County, you can purchase a monthly permit to fish Waterworks Park,
near Annapolis Mall, off of the Defense Highway. They limit the number of
permits
per month, in order to maintain an enhanced fishery and reduce the 'pressure' on
the park.
A series of three, large fresh water ponds were built in 1911,
and later expanded
to provide and supplement fresh, potable water to the City of Annapolis.
The 500-acre
watershed park is now off-line, and has been formally dedicated as a natural
area park
of the incorporated city. The ponds were hot, with a significant amount of
fine turbidity
and suspended algae. Large expanses of their upper reaches were shallow,
silted-in
deltas that supported vegetated wetlands as large if not larger than the open
water bodies.
We fished two
of the three ponds for about four hours and caught several bluegill
and five largemouth bass. Dave is an excellent angler and is able
to pin-point
lures into difficult cover. The best fishing of the day came along probably the
most
secluded reach of shoreline. We cast right up against the banks, and the bass
were
up under vegetation and on structure right along the edge of the shore,
and within the shade line of the overhanging canopy.
The best lure of the
day was Dave's spinner-bait, which was white-skirted and had
twin, silver willow-leaf blades. I guess the flash of the blades, along
with the white
color was necessary for the fish to see in such turbid water.
