I took today off and took my
two younger boys to the
Maryland State Fair in the
morning and then fishing in
the afternoon.
Marsh St.
Johnswort (Triadenum
virginicum,
OBL) was at peak
bloom and
occurred
throughout the
shorelines at
the edge of the
water, along
with patches of
yellow
Bidens.
We fished
from 5:00 to
8:00 PM and
caught 19
bass, 1
pickerel and
1 bluegill.
Jeb caught
the majority
of his fish
on a
watermelon
colored,
Bass Pro
Shops tube-bait.
I primarily
used a black
& blue
laminate
Senko worm,
Yamamoto
Kreature
(pumpkinseed)
and YUM
buzzfrog.
Jeb caught
the most
fish on the
day.
His hook was
a weighted,
Gamakatsu
finesse worm
hook.
He would
just bounce
the tube off
the bottom
and bam!
This
butterfly
hitched
a ride
on the
boat for
a while.
Other than an
occasional
beaver and some
waterfowl, it
was a quiet and
beautiful day on
the water.
Twice today
Mark and Jeb
and then
Mark and I
caught fish
at the exact
same time,
casting into
shoreline
vegetation.
I was
drenched in
sweat.
It was
hazy-sunny,
in the mid
90's and
humid.
Our compact,
aluminum
jon-boat
(Bass Pro
Tracker
Tadpole) is
like a
convection
oven,
reflecting
light and
heat back up
onto us.
It's main
benefit is
that we can
hand carry
it thru the
woods and
get in to
water that
only a canoe
could
typically
get into.
I've
generally
had fairly
good
fishing,
when its
been really
hot out, so
it's worth
it. Go
deep or
shady-shallow.
Our boat
only draws
about
six-inches
of water, so
we can
really get
into shallow
water and
vegetated
cover.
We finished
the day with
a two-fer at
dusk, as the
sun set and
the
mosquitos
came out.
