Weekday Summer Fishing
8/7/06
Mark Burchick

We snuck away from the Howard County Fair, and got in some afternoon fishing.
We started with topwater lures, roadrunners and spinnerbaits and lost two fish,
that were able to spit out the hooks.

What that really means is that we did not have a good hook set.
So here is how we salvaged the day and caught over 30 bass in two hours. We used Gamakatsu worm hooks (1/16 and 1/8) with the weight built into the hook. Mark and Jeb used a 5-inch Yamamoto Senko, green pumpkin flake worm and I used a Zoom green pumpkin ultravibe speed craw. We occasionally sprayed on some Spike-It Crawfish Slime-It fish attractant gel, which creates an oil slick on the water. I think it is effectively chum in a can.
All of the fish were one-pound and under, and we worked about a half-mile of bank cover from the boat.
On our last fishing venture, we lost a rod & reel to Davy Jones locker. We attempted to grapple for it, but to no avail. I purchased a Bass Pro XPS 6' 6" medium heavy rod, coupled with a Shimano Stradic 2500 FH spincaster. I love it!
The best thing we can say about small bass, is that they are little banshees for their size, and give you a great ride.
The Senko's were hot!
Jeb said he was 'tired' of pesky small bass and errant hits by bluegill, and a few casts later, landed a crappie, Go figure.
