We had to use our
truck and drag a few
freshly cut sweetgum
that a beaver felled
across the dirt road
to our fishing hole.
We watched a beaver
swim across the
water as we fished.
He was in no hurry,
and was enjoying the
beautiful afternoon. |
 |
Mark caught this
largemouth with
a Jimmy Houston
Terminator,
small-sized
spinnerbait,
with an
all-white skirt. |
 |
I caught this
one with a
pumpkin green,
5-inch Senko
worm, matched
with a Gamakatsu
1/16 jobee hook
(a worm hook
with a built-in
weight). |
 |
Jeb caught this
bass on a
red-headed
Blakemore
Roadrunner with
a black and
chartreuse
skirt. |
 |
Jeb worked a
mega-fight when
he landed this
catfish on a
salted YUM,
buzzfrog (green
pumpkin &
chartreause
colored), again
matched with the
1/16 jobee hook. |
 |
I don't know my
catfish/bullhead
species, but I
think its a
channel cat? |
 |
The cat had four
whiskers under
his chin, and
two long barbels
coming off his
upper lip. A
distinguishing
feature was a
red lateral line
running the
length of his
sides. I do know
that barbels
have external
taste buds built
into them which
aid catfish in
finding food. |
 |
Such an ugly
fish, but one of
the best
tasting! |
 |
New York
ironweed was at
peak bloom along
portions of the
bank. |
 |
Today was the
best day of
fishing my son
Mark has ever
had! We were
fishing from our
Tracker Tadpole,
throwing into
the shoreline
banks, and up
under
overhanging
cover. Jeb and I
were using Senko
worms on
Gamakatsu jobee
hooks and Mark
was using a YUM
buzzfrog on a
jobee hook (the
weight is built
into the 1/16
worm hook). As
soon as he said
"fish-on" and
the
spinning-spool
went reeling, I
knew he hooked
into something
nice. Jeb
grabbed the net,
and I took
photos. |
 |
The fish broke
water twice, and
Mark patiently
worked him to
the boat, with a
big splash right
in front of us.
Hot dang, it was
a really big
bass! |
 |
Back and forth,
alongside and
under the boat.
"Work him," we
said. |
 |
Jeb never got a
good net on him,
but I was able
to lip him at
the boat. Mark
was kind enough
to let me pose
with his lunker,
as he first came
out of the
water. |
 |
Way to go Mark!
We've now caught
three 'whoppers'
on this season.
I've been
blessed with
catching a
6.4-pound and a
4.5-pound
bucketmouth this
summer, and now
Mark finally
lands a nice
one. Jeb is
next. |
 |
He weighed-in at
5.1-pounds, the
biggest fish of
his life to
date. We fish
'catch &
release,' but we
took this
particular fish
and relocated
him to a
friend's pond in
Clarksville,
Howard County,
MD. We put him
in a cooler of
stream water,
and put in a few
ice cubes and
two air
diffusers. |
 |
It took just
over an hour to
get home, but
the fish was in
good shape. |
 |
Mark acclimated
him to his new
home, and after
a few minutes
took off with a
strong flap, and
goodbye. Now, in
the future, the
Cole/D'Asto
family and
friends may be
able to enjoy
the thrill of
the mega-fish
Mark and Jeb
named Brutus. |
