Kerr Lake Fishing
Labor Day Weekend
Henderson, NC
Sept 2-4 2006
Mark Burchick

KERR LAKE
BETZ RESIDENCE
The Burchick family spent the extended holiday weekend with the Betz family at their waterfront home on Kerr Lake. Kerr Lake is the upper of the two Bassmaster Tournament chain of Kerr & Gaston Lakes. Kerr Lake is 50,000 acres and has 85-miles of shoreline, and straddles the North Carolina/Virginia border. The town of Henderson is just off of Route 85 and is north of Durham/Chapel Hill and south of Richmond/Petersburg. In the background of this photo you can see the Betz house, dock and 1-acre waterfront lot.
Jeb took this largemouth bass from Laguna Beach, while fishing alongside a submerged tree. He was using a YUM 4-inch, green pumpkin, mega-tube on a weighted worm hook.
We put out catfish lines on bottle floats, and worked them throughout the weekend. We checked them a few times per day with the Sea-Doo, bought in our catch and refreshed the bait. In preparation for our catfish fry, we drilled all of the catfish to the side of the shed to skin them. Dan Betz has a great set-up with an outdoor sink to clean the catch-of-the-day.
Jeb got a crankbait hung up on the shore line, and he hopped out to fetch the lure, claiming he caught a rockfish, which they do have in Kerr Lake (striped bass).
Mark Burchick, Amanda Betz and Zach White spent many hours on Big Bertha. In this photo Amanda holds on to Zach's face in preparation for an upcoming wake-wave.
Overboard!
Jeb and I gave it a ride too, but at an acceptable speed limit.
Wearing life vests between our legs, we were able to bob and drink. Patti and Dan in the background and Michelle and Jeb in the foreground. We all beached our boats and had a cookout and played horseshoes. I think we may have bobbed for over an hour, as Brian provided bartending services.
One benefit of a freshwater lake is no jellyfish.
I caught this 2.6-pound largemouth off of a submerged timber pile. I was using a YUM mega-tube with LPT (impregnated live prey technology plus salt). While fishing in the cove, both a mature and immature bald eagle were perched on a dead loblolly pine at the water's edge and watched as we played.
Showing-off on my way to the boat's livewell.
Around the evening campfire, Jeb provides a tutorial on how to make smores.

Needless to say, she went overboard.
Dan and Patti had both a three-seat Sea-Doo and a Yamaha Wave Runner. The Sea-Doo is a powerful, stable and dependable mini-van, and the Wave Runner is a nimble, lightning rice-burner.
Michelle enjoys the sun. We heard a rumor that it was fairly overcast and rainy in Maryland this weekend. What a shame.
Way cool, I can see why jet-skiing is so popular.
Furby the miniature poodle is the mascot of the party barge pontoon-boat, named Redneck Yacht Club.
