STREN Tournament PRE
FISHING Mark Burchick
Pre-Fishing
FLW Stren Tournament
Mark and I spent the day with Steve
Kolbe as he prepares for next weeks
$25,000 FLW Stren
Tournament on the
Potomac River. Pre-fishing allows
a professional angler to develop his
strategy
come tourney time and refine his techniques. With Mark and I on
the boat, we get great fishing tips,
Steve gets us on fish and we use a
diversity of lures to see what's
working.
We met Steve at Fort
Smallwood, at the
mouth of the
Mattawoman on the
Potomac River in
Charles County and
motored down to
Chicamuxen Creek,
opposite Quantico
Creek. Mark
ties on heavy
weighted Gamakatsu
finesse hooks to
ensure he can punch
thru the SAV weed
mat.
Numerous anglers
were fishing
today's Anglers
Choice
Tournament and
this guy caught
this nice keeper
on a YUM
Buzzfrog.
Dominant SAV
included
Myriophyllum
or watermilfoil,
Ceratophyllum
or coontail and
Vallisneria
or wild celery.
Water
temperature was
around
85-degrees with
water clarity
usually to
three-feet
plus. We saw
many yellow
perch, and if we
scaled down our
offering, I'm
sure that we
could have
caught more than
enough for a
dinner.
Steve caught
this one on a
5-inch Senko.
An Eastern
Amberwing
(Perithemis
tenera)
lands on Steve
baitcaster.
Amberwings are a
small, stocky
dragonfly that
mimic wasps.
They are
perchers,
resting on
shoreline plants
and rods & reels
and prefer
sluggish rivers
with floating
vegetation,
flying low over
the water.
These guys had
the right idea
for protection
from the sun.
The best lures
of the day were
green pumpkin or
watermelon
colored Yamamoto
Senko worms and
Yamamoto
Kreature baits.
We also got good
hits from Zoom
Vibracraws.
