Sundown
Around the Pond
7/27/07 Mark Burchick
A bitter tonic made
from the yellow
roots of this plant
are used to improve
appetite and dispel
indigestion. I
have no problem with
appetite, but maybe
chewing on the roots
could be an
alternative to the
expensive Prevacid
(as in
prevent-acid) that I
take.
Dan and I worked
opposite sides
of the pond.
He caught
several on a
top-water
buzz-bait and I
did my best
damage on a

Innovation Sweet
Beaver and
Yamamoto Senko,
5-inch worm.
My cane toads
(Gambler) and
buzzfrog (YUM)
did not catch
anything.
Luna Moth
Actias luna
Luna's
have seasonal
forms where they
are
double-brooded.
This 'summer'
moth has yellow
wing margins
instead of pink
or purple, which
show those
emerging in the
spring.
The larva feeds
mainly on sweet
gum trees, and
then to a lesser
extent persimmon
and black
walnut, all tree
species
typical along
bottomland
edges.
This moth may
have been
emerging because
of the spreading
wings and curly
tail that I
suspect was
still in the
process of
'stiffening' for
use in flight.
Cardinal Flower
|Lobelia
cardinalis
The common name
for this plant
refers to the
color of the
vestments of a
Roman Catholic
Cardinal.
Cardinal flower
is a southern
species and the
range of the
hummingbird is
consistent with
the range of the
cardinal flower.
Hence, not too
many cardinal
flowers or
hummingbirds in
New England
(just like how
the range of
pokeweed was the
same as the
extinct
passenger
pigeon).
