Fishing
in the Carolinas I
7/20/07 Mark Burchick
First Week of July
North & South Carolina
Vacation
April, Amanda & Mark
The Burchick's
(Mark, Michelle,
Mark & Jeb, with
Josh and Mike
staying home to
work) spent the week
with the Betz Family
at their Kerr Lake
home in North
Carolina, a few days
near Columbia, South
Carolina
with Mark's brother
Jamie's family and a
few days at Myrtle
Beach, South
Carolina.
Kerr Lake is
over 50,000
acres and is
part of the
Kerr/Gaston
chain of
lakes in
North
Carolina and
Virginia.
Buttonbush
(Cephalanthus
occidentalis),
also known
as honeyball is the
dominant
shoreline
cover, and
the flowers
were
historically
used by
crushing
into a
'soap' for
washing
hair.
Being a
fragrant
astringent,
it will
remove oils
from hair.
How
convenient!
I found
an
arrowhead
in the
Betz
waterfront
yard.
You know
its an
arrowhead
by the
twelve
percussion
points
along
the rim
of the
quartz.
For
whatever
reason
the
native
who made
it
abandon
it due
to a
poor
strike
that
made the
stone
not
suitable
to
finish,
balance and
use.
Nature
can not
make
twelve
percussion
points!
I wonder
how old
it is?
Woodland
era
Indians
from the
last
2000-years?
Dan
spotted
an
albino
gray
squirrel
and I
took
chase
with my
camera.
With my
zoom all
the way
out, I
was able
to
capture
just one
photo,
as the
squirrel
high-tailed
it out
of
Dodge,
posing
for the
fleeting shot.
Summertime
life on
Kerr
Lake is
centered
around
being on
the
water,
fishing,
boating,
swimming
and
socializing.
Jeb and
I sit on
boat
cushions
and
'bob' on
the
water.
The Betz
have a
fleet
that
consists
of a
pontoon
boat,
Ranger
bass
boat and
two Sea
Doo's.
This red
Sea Doo
is like
a big
ol'
Harley
Davidson
on the
water,
with a
strong
and
stable
platform,
suitable
for
using to
tow a
water
skier.
This
boat
came in
handy to
check
our many
catfish
'jug'
lures &
lines.
