"First Day of Summer
Fishing" 6/21/07 -
Longest day of the year
Mark Burchick
The adventures
of Ben and
Erica, as Ben
sinks into a
freshwater
meadow swamp
(floating mats)
of water
purslane (Ludwigia
palustris).
Spring is
over and
summer
plants are
starting to
come into
bloom.
Fairly
common in
sunny
wetland
meadows,
blue vervain
(Verbena
hastata)
flowers from
July thru
August.
It's not too
often that
we come
across a
'gley'
hydric soil.
This soil
keyed out as
6/N,
a blue-green-gray
soil that
only a soil
scientist
(like
Juliet) could
get excited
about.
Soft-stem
bulrush
(Scirpus
validus)
is a tall,
attractive,
robust
perennial of
sunny
shorelines.
We took in
some fishing
at lunch and
Ben took
first strike
with a
handsome
largemouth
bass.
Now this is
how you
start off
summer time!
Ben comes
back with a
second slab,
both fish
being caught
on a ZOOM
green
pumpkin,
Ultravibe
Speed Craw
on a finesse
worm hook.
Erica
catches her
first
largemouth
bass ever!
She caught
the fish on
a big fish
bait, the
Reaction
Innovation,
green
pumpkin
Sweet Beaver
on a 4-ot
worm hook.
Pickerelweed
(Pontederia
cordata) was
a peak bloom
along the
shoreline,
and bumble
bees were
working them
hard.
Excuse
the pun,
"I think
she's
hooked,"
as she
buries
the hook
into the
soft
plastic,
making
the lure
weedless.
Erica
made
some
great
casts
working
any form
of
structure
she
could
find
(i.e.
shade
lines,
alongside
lily
pads,
algae
rack
lines,
submerged
vegetation
and
stumps).
She
understood
the
concept
that a
largemouth
bass is
an
'ambush'
predator.
