Pocomoke River
Snow Hill, Shad Landing & Corker's Creek
Worcester County, MD
Spring time on the wild and
scenic Pocomoke is about as good as it gets!
The Pocomoke originates in
the Great Cypress Swamp on the
Maryland-Delaware border and flows 55-miles
through Maryland before
it empties into the Pocomoke Sound at the Chesapeake
Bay.
The word Pocomoke is a Indian term for "black water"
due to the high
tannic color of the water.
The fresh-tidal Pocomoke is the northernmost bald cypress swamp
in the
United States and reminds you of the mighty Congaree National Park,
in
Santee-Cooper South Carolina. |

Dave, Frank and I took off
work for a mental health day and went fishing. We caught over 120 fish
including three varieties of bluegill sunfish, white and yellow perch, black
crappie and largemouth bass.

Basking
turtles.
|
 |
We caught
one golden shiner
|
 |
The
dominant fish of the day were black crappie, with most being
large-sized pan
fish.
|
 |
We
primarily used jig head hooks with small white tube or curlytail
baits, live
worms, floating stickpin minnows and spinnerbaits.
You must fish with
a bobber when using a jig or you will loose all
of your bait to underwater
woody debris. You loose enough tackle to overhanging vegetation, in
that, most of the fish are holding tight to
the banks and precision casting ensures positive hook-up's.

Breeding
colors.
|
 |
The white
perch were the best fighting fish of the day and when
you hook into one you
know it.
|
 |
The subtle
fragrance of fringetree along the banks was wonderful.
|
 |
Ice cold
beer, cigars, a remote natural area, sunny in the low 80's
and non-stop fish . . . priceless.
