Dan Betz and I spent the afternoon doing some
southern Maryland pond fishing.
Maryland ponds are starting to warm up enough so that the fish
are shaking off winter's lethargy
and pre-spawn is starting as
water temperatures warm.
Dan caught
six largemouth bass and I caught one, working three different ponds.
The lure
dejoir was Dan's chartreuse crankbait, which caught five
bass, but unfortunately
was lost in battle to a black willow tree.
The lure is now an Easter ornament on top of the tree.
We saw
beautiful, iridescent swallows feeding on the wing over
the ponds and Canada geese have paired-up and are seeking
nesting locations.
Dan caught
a sizable black crappie but lost him in the retrieve
as his wife called him on the cell phone at the exact same time
as he was attempting to land the fish.
It was
sunny, breezy with a cool snap in the air. I tried in-line
spinners
(Chatterbaits), and several types of plastics to no avail.
My only bass came on a Senko worm that was pumpkinseed with
a chartreuse tip. I also tried Stren Microfuse braid line, which
looked and felt like dental floss.I'm partial to my favorite Berkley
Trilene
series of lines (MAXX, XL and ET).
