FISHING REELS -THE FACTS
Buying a New Rod and Reel Soon?
Here's a Tip:
In choosing a rod and reel to be used in combination, make sure that when
secured together they have a balanced feel in your hand. Both your rod and reel
should be rated for the same line and lure weights. This assures that you can
cast your lure the farthest and have the maximum sensitivity in feeling a fish
bite. Now that you have the proper combination of rod, reel and line, make sure
that the knot you use to secure your hook, swivel or lure is strong enough to
withstand the shock of a fish strike.
SPIN CASTING:
Spinning rods and reels are very popular. They are
not expensive, allow for casting of light lures, and are easy to use. The first
two or three line guides on a spinning rod are large, because the line "billows"
off the end of the reel spool during the cast. To cast with a spinning reel, you
open the wire "bail" that wraps line around the spool, holding the line with
your index finger. Release the line as you move the rod forward and with a
little practice you're casting like a champ. Nylon monofilament line of 6- to
12-pound test works best on most spinning reels.
SPINNING REEL:
Like a spinning
reel, the spin-casting reel has a stationary spool, with line leaving and
returning at one end of that spool. But the spool on the spin-casting reel is
enclosed, so you can't see it. The line is released by use of a thumb-button at
the back of the reel.
BAIT CASTING:
These reels differ greatly from both spinning and
spin-cast reels because the spool sits perpendicular (cross-ways) to the rod
rather than parallel to it. Because the spool moves during casting and
retrieving, these reels are often called revolving-spool reels. Bait-casting
tackle requires more practice, patience and skill than both spinning and
spin-casting tackle, but once mastered, allows for pin-point casting accuracy
and excellent line control when fishing and playing fish.
FLY CASTING:
As mentioned earlier, artificial flies are very
light, making
them virtually impossible to cast with most rods and reels. So fly casters use a
special kind of line and a certain kind of rod that allow even the smallest of
flies to be cast long distances. The line itself provides the casting weight,
and the rod's size and flexibility are matched to the line's weight for best
casting results. Fly-fishing line is thicker and more visible than other types
of fishing line, so fly anglers use several feet of monofilament or other
low-visibility material as a "leader" between the fly and the fly line. |

CUSTOM TREASURE MAP -
BLACK HILL REGIONAL
PARK
from Mark Burchick I had a meeting last week at
the Park, related to a nine-month construction project I am
involved with. The park superintendent introduced me to his
fisheries biologist (Glenn), and he created a sketch map for
me, which I then added the notes to an aerial. The lake has
large and smallmouth bass, tiger muskie, bluegill & crappie.
Glenn says the lake is under-utilized and that the fishing
is good.

Boyds/Clarksburg, Montgomery County, MD - Aug. 26,
2006 -
Here's a treasure map for fishing Black Hill Regional Park,
Little Seneca Lake, with it's 505-acres of open water, and
15.7-miles of shoreline |
The yellow highlights are
his favorite fishing holes. Lots of standing timber and lots
of hydrilla grass beds. The best way to get to the
lake is take 1-270 to exit-16, Father Hurley Blvd/Ridge
Road, going east. Drive on Ridge Road and take a left onto
Frederick Road (Rte. 355), going north. Take a left
onto West Old Baltimore Road, go a few miles, pass under
I-270, and take a left hand turn into the MNCPPC, Black Hill
Park.
Follow the signs to the boat ramp (no gas engines
allowed). Happy Fishing!

Liberty
Reservoir -Baltimore
County, MD
What Can You Catch?
Fish Species
-
The reservoir is managed
for warm, cool,
and
cold water fish species. Largemouth
bass, smallmouth bass, along
with
bluegill, crappie,
and white perch are
the most popular warm water fish. White
crappie and the bass often reach trophy
size. White perch still average about 10
inches despite being very plentiful in
the reservoir.
 Striped bass were
stocked between 1981 and 1984. They have
been reproducing naturally since 1986 so
expect to catch a variety of sizes, with
some of the stocked fish now in the
40-pound range. This reservoir also
supports
a fine walleye fishery,
sustained by good natural reproduction. A 12-pound walleye was surveyed
recently.

stating their boat will be used only on these
reservoirs. Live bait is prohibited unless
purchased from a Maryland certified zebra
mussel-free bait store. |

Our note. Rock bass and crappie are the
"in fish" right now this time of year!
Shorelines -
just find the rocks...get a small
black/red-eyed jig head...find the color
grub for the day and do "drops" below
the ledges. Go in the morning...when it
heats up, go after the crappie. Pitch
towards structure found about 5-8 ft
off the shorelines adjacent to where
you're fishing. Use small jigs again,
and dot it with a piece of
nightcrawler this time. Find one, stay
there and fish that area for 5-10
minutes until the bites end. I've hit
15-20 large-sized Crappie in a normal
find during May. You just have to keep
casting
until you find where they are. You'll
get them on the move, but this is how
you catch multiples within
a short period of time. Works with
yellow perch to some extent, and of
course white perch. You'll be
pickin' through about 10 small one's to
get a nice one. Still fun!
Liberty Reservoir / Carroll - Baltimore Co., NE of Sykesville;
from Rt. 26, turn N on Oakland Mill Rd; largemouth and
smallmouth bass, striped bass, walleye, crappie, channel
catfish, yellow perch, white perch, bluegill sunfish, carp,
rainbow and brown trout. For boat permits and
information call

Loch Raven
Reservoir - Baltimore County, MD What Can You Catch
Here?
Largemouth and smallmouth
bass, striped bass, walleye, crappie, channel
catfish, yellow perch,white perch, bluegill
sunfish, carp, rainbow and brown trout. We've
seen 3-4ft pike pulled out off the shorelines.
Bobbers, & extra large shiners...more to come on
that at a later time...
Our Note: When you aren't getting anything,
nothing beats switchin' up bait/tackle and
swinging at some Catfish or Carp! There are huge
catfish out past the fishing shop/boat ramp. Go
deep and drop some chicken livers. For carp, of
course get out the doughballs and/or corn.
Treble hooked, bottom rigged, and your headed
for some fighting. Find a channel or cove and
you'll most likely see those submarine-sized
carp sliding around. They won't normally bite
your bait. Still, pitch it out near the feeding
area and just let the rod stay for a bit.
Be
prepared to see it bend and have a hand ready to
grab it.
