Evening Pond Fishing
West Friendship, Howard County, MD
 |
Tom D'Asto, Dan & Patti Betz and I went fishing
from 5:30 PM
till sundown,
just a little after 7:00 PM. The pond was a beautiful
ground water and stream fed system, about two acres in size, and
which contained both hydrilla and wild celery (submerged aquatic vegetation). Tom caught this bass on a Yamamoto
Kreature soft plastic bait.

 |
Winterberry Ilex verticillata (FACW),
a deciduous holly, grew
along the banks.
The late afternoon sun shows just how brilliant
the berries can be. |
 |
I landed this healthy three-pounder using a
Yamamoto 5-inch Crawdad
(green pumpkin with black flake). I caught twelve bass on the day, all
with the crawdad, a 7-inch black-colored Berkley Powerbiat Ribbontail
Powerworm
and Reaction Innovations Sweet Beaver.
(green pumpkin with
red flake).

 |
Silky Dogwood Cornus amomum (FACW+)
with it's bluish berries,
growing out over the water. |
 |
Redosier Dogwood Cornus sericea
(a.k.a. C. stolonifera, FACW)
has whitish berries. Both species of
dogwoods prefer wetlands
and the berries of both species are relished by birds
and squirrels. |
 |
The pond was like glass. Toward sundown I
switched to a Rapala
Skitter-Pop, twitching the floating lure on the surface,
which
produced three topwater bass. Sweet! |
 |
Dan and Patti caught several as well. Dan was
primarily using a
white spinnerbait and buzzbait as it got dark. |
Thank you Tom for coordinating this wonderful
afternoon, and thank you to the land owner.
