Pocomoke
River - PART II
Fresh Tidal, Bald Cypress Swamp
10/19/07
Worchester County, MD
Dr. Chandler
Robbins, a US FWS
ornithologist says
that the Pocomoke
River is a
concentration point
for migrating
passerine birds.
In a breeding bird
survey of a 19-acre
tract near Shad
Landing, Paul
Springer found 363
birds, with 36
species present, 20
being considered
forest interior
species.
We saw berries
everywhere
today, hanging
out over the
water,
winterberry,
Virginia
creeper, grape
and several
species of
Viburnum.
Fringe tree
leaves were
bright yellow
and the gums
were bright red,
with all of the
trees beginning
to change color,
in preparation
for autumn leaf
drop. Most
of the
spatterdock was
deteriorating
underneath the
water.
We all lost
several lures
each, and spent
a goodly amount
of time tying
line knots, and
'fishing' our
lures out of
sunken woody
debris and bank
vegetation.
Most of our best
fish came from
outside
meanders, steep
walls of
underwater
topography and
tight up against
bank vegetation.
If you could
get bait up and
under
vegetation, you
could almost
always count on
getting a
strike.
We used lots of
small plastic
jigs on bobbers.
The bobbers help
keep lures off
the woody floor
of the creeks
and river.
Today's fish
were hungry and
hit the lures
hard. I
guess the fish
are noticing the
changing angle
of sunlight, the
shortening day
length and
cooler water/air
temperatures.
It's time to eat
hearty prior to
winter lethargy.
Hey, Jeff caught
fish too!
What!?, back to
back fish . . .
. . . Jeff was
on fire for the
last hour of
fishing on the
incoming tide.
