It's Early Autumn
Persimmon
Diospyrus virginiana
The yellowing and falling leaves of persimmon exposing the fruit
is one of those sure signs that autumn is coming.
Even though it's going to be in the mid 80's for the next week with
no sign of rain in the extended forecast, it still looks like fall is proceeding in the woods.
Persimmons turn orange to black when ripe.  They are very
astringent and mouth numbing when green/orange.

They become sweet and edible when ripe, after at least one good
hard freeze. The typical first frost of the year occurs between
the third and last week of October.

In late October through November every raccoon scat (poop) that you will see in the woods will contain persimmon seeds.
Persimmons offer an excellent source of fiber and contain lots of vitamin A, plus are a good source of vitamin C.
