While fishing
today, we shared
the water
resources with a
hungry osprey.
Perching from
trees along the
banks he worked
the water for an
hour plus.
He would hover
and dive, and in
the end, did no
better than Mark
and I. He
did carry on
with the
chirping and
this is what he
sounded like:
He came
quite close
to the boat,
probably
seeing fish
that we
could not.
Osprey
usually
leave for
their
wintering
grounds in
central and
south
America in
the late
summer (mid
September),
so I assume
that this
bird was
snacking
while in
migration?
Maybe the
extraordinarily
warm weather
has kept
some of the
Bay osprey
around
longer than
usual?
The osprey
or fish hawk
are
fish-eating
specialists,
with live
fish
accounting
for over 90%
of their
diet!
Walking along a
trail we saw
several
Aralia spinosa
(Devils
Walking-Stick,
appropriate for
Halloween),
bowing down with
the weight of
heavy fruit
clusters.
The native shrub
is loaded with
spines on the
bark (like a
cartoon bull dog
collar), hence
the common name
for the plant.
The autumn mass
of berries are
toxic to human
but are a minor
food source for
birds.
