Afternoon Fishing 10/20/06
Mark Burchick
Mushrooms were growing
from a rotting stump,
along the fringe of the
pond.
Howard County
schools had off
today, so as soon as
I got home from
work, we went
fishing for the late
afternoon. Jeb took
first fish, with
this tiny bass
caught on a
Blakemore
Roadrunner.
I caught this guy on
a BooYah
Spinnerbait.
This was Mark's
third fish on the
day, caught on a
BooYah Spinnerbait.
He swapped out from
a Senko, because it
was so windy out,
but the Senko took
in two smaller bass.
Working from the top
of the pond riser
structure, Mark got
an aerial
perspective. He
hooked one small
bass as he cast
parallel with the
dam face bank, along
a thicket of
cattail.
I got this handsome
two-pounder working
up a steep slope
with a weightless,
5-inch black & blue
laminate Senko worm
and Gamakatsu offset
shank worm hook
(size 3/0).
Mark nailed this
aggressive
2.4-pounder on a
BooYah Spinner, and
really got our
attention when we
heard the fish pull
drag line!
Jeb pulls in his own
fish in the
two-pound range
using a 2-inch
Storm, Wild Eye Swim
Shad. We recently
bought two packs of
Storm swimbaits. I'm
looking forward to
trying the big
4-inch Swim Shad,
while hunting for
bigger bass from the
boat. Jeb said the
shad had great
action in the water,
but got caught-up in
the weeds fairly
often. In the next
few days we will
work these swim
baits some more and
spray on some
'stink-um.' We have
both Shad Fish
Formula and garlic
Slime-It by
Spike-It. I think
these soft,
paddle-tail plastics
may work well
because Jeb said he
watched three or
four fish follow the
bait right up into
the bank. Not
fishing with him, I
don't know why the
fish did not commit.
Maybe he was reeling
in too fast to keep
from getting hung up
in weeds?
