Somewhere
on the Mattawoman
11/18/06 Mark Burchick
Heavy rain overflow from beaver ponds were where all the
fished lined up looking for incoming snacks.
Saturday morning was cold but clear, warming-up to a
respectable 52-degrees by mid-day. Mark started with a
BooYah spinnerbait.
I started with a 6.5-inch Senko Kut Tail Worm, switched to a
Storm Shad Spinner, a Spro Frog and settled in with the
Chatterbait, which caught the bulk of my fish.
It was a hot day on the water, Mark caught 12 largemouth
bass, and I caught eight.
All of our casts were into the banks, primarily at stream
heads, up under bank vegetation and the remains of
grass/sedge/rush and then fallen timber. All of our strikes
came within a few feet from the bank.
Mark had the super hot lure of the day that I purchased just
yesterday from Green Top. It was the Mega-Strike Cavitron
Buzzbait.
That lure brought in 10 of 12 bass for Mark. Every strike
came before the lure broke to the surface. The buzzbait is a
slow, loud vibrating bait that cranks out air bubbles
because of the holes in the blade. I suspect that because
the water was a very tannic, stained, dark color, the fish
really que'd in on the sound/vibration.
I had success with both the chart/white skirt Chatterbait
and Rick Clunn Luck "E" Strike Trickster spinnerbait.
After a while I made Mark go to the back of the boat and
navigate, cause I had to get in on the action. The winds
were strong enough that we were getting pushed all over the
place. Someone forgot to charge our marine-grade, deep-cycle
Diehard and the Minn Kota trolling motor was weak for the
day.
Dang, I can't say enough good things about the Cavitron,
lure de-jour, excuse my French.
Mark yelled out, "get the net" as he landed Mr. Chunky,
right in the mouth of a foamy, incoming stream.
