Christmas
Fishing 12/24/06 Mark Burchick
Mark and
I snuck
out
Christmas
Eve
afternoon
and were
on the
water
from
about
2:00
thru
sundown,
around
5:00 pm.
We
caught
five
chain
pickerel,
five
largemouth
bass,
and
three
others
that we
could
not land
and get
to the
boat for
the
photo-op
and
release.
This
is
the
first
chain
pickerel
that
Mark
has
ever
caught,
and
he
said
that
it
felt
quite
different
than
a
bass.
He
went
on
to
catch
two
others.
They
strike
hard,
whereas
the
bass
were
much
more
subtle
today.
We
both
caught
big
ones.
Mark
caught
all
of
his
on a
Cavitron
buzz
bait.
He
swapped
out
with
a
shallow
(4-foot
deep
running)
Rapala
crank
hardbait,
but
that
bait
was
not
productive.
I
used
a
Terminator
spinnerbait
and
Booyah
boogie
bait
(a
Booyah
knock-off
of a
Chatterbait)
on
my
spinning
rod
and
a
big
1/2-inch
Chatterbait
on
my
baitcaster,
all
of
which
caught
fish.
I
caught
this
pickerel
while
trolling
with
the
Chatterbait.
This
photo
shows
the
Booyah
boogie
bait,
a
variant
in-line
spinner
that
has
been
a
productive
bait
all
year.
It
was
around
50-degrees
most
of
the
day,
but
the
sun
rides
low
this
time
of
year,
and
an
occasional
cold
breeze
reminds
you
that
we
are
in
the
'off-season.'
I'm
sure
skim
ice
will
be
on
the
water
tonight.
Mark
and
I
both
cast
into
the
shoreline
grasses,
within
feet
of
each
other
and
both
immediately
got
strikes.
He
was
using
the
Cavitron
and
I
had
the
Booyah.
It
was
like
the
bass
schooled-up
in
the
warm
shallows
of
the
shoreline
fetch.
That
was
fun!
This
bass
pulled
the
skirt
down
off
of
my
Chatterbait.
With
the
sun
setting,
Mark
takes
last
strike
near
a
riffle
pool.
