WEST FRIENDSHIP, MD - FISHING
Tom D'asto and his son Nick invited
Jeb and I to fish a six-acre farm pond, on the property of a Maryland State
Senator. I should note that it was a high quality Republican pond!
 |
This private pond does not receive much fishing
pressure and had lots of SAV (submerged aquatic vegetation). We fished for
just over two-hours (6:30 to
8:30 PM) and we caught 19 bass between the four of
us. Most all of the fish were
in the 1 to 2-pound size class. My
best lure of the day was a Reaction Innovation Sweet Beaver. |
 |
The pond was surrounded by a
mix of mature woods with rock outcrops, hay fields and cattle pasture.
Venus Looking Glass (Specularia perfoliata) was a common flowering plant in
the pasture. The genus and common name of this plant comes from the Latin
specularis, which means mirrors or spectacles (glasses) because of the
shiny, reflective seeds of the plant.

 |
Nick (left) and Jeb fish from
the dock. Jeb cast into a line of SAV along the shore, and nailed the big
fish of the day with a Yamamoto Senko 5-inch, green pumpkin colored worm. |
 |
His big fish dialed in at
three-pounds. I did not want to tell Jeb, but he was standing over a sandy
hole that had about a dozen freshly hatched, leathery
snake eggs. |
 |
I was pitching into dense
cover and could hear Tom nearby, constantly laughing
like a child as he caught
six fish within a 10-minute span. He was using ZOOM plastic lizards and
other plastics and hit into a great streak. He is relatively new
to
fishing and had an outstanding evening.
|
 |
Adding to his great evening
of fishing he switched over to a buzzbait and cast
into open slots between
patches of SAV. He got hit after hit, and the surface
action was hot.
After he slowed down just a bit, he nailed his first topwater largemouth.
His next cast however went into the trees. He wanted his 'trophy'
lure and
climbed the tree like a bear, but to no avail. It was getting dark, and we
had to leave. |
Thank you Tom, Nick and the homeowner for a wonderful evening of fishing.
The pond and its surroundings were beautiful!
