Fishing
in Howard County Maryland 5/1/07 Mark
Burchick
Full moon
rising, setting
sun and a
temperature of
72-degrees.
Dogwood is in
flower, and May
is absolutely my
favorite month
of the year.
The pond was
holding Canada
geese, mallard,
wood duck,
kingfisher and
redwing
blackbirds.
In the
course of an
hour Mark
and I caught
12
largemouth
bass.
We primarily
used
Yamamoto
Senko 5-inch
worms, in
pumpkinseed
and black &
blue
laminate,
then coupled
with a
Gamakatsu
3/0 off-set
worm hook,
and no
weights.
The final
touch was a
modest dab
of
Mega-Strike
fish
attractant,
spread onto
the worms.
Our line was
14-pound
Silver
Thread AN40
copolymer.
We cast over
the shallow
flats, with
an
occasional
twitch of
the line as
we slowly
reeled back
to the bank.
The fish
were on-fire
aggressive!
Rebel
tolerates
fishing and
I think
Bernese
Mountain
Dogs are
hard-wired
to be
semi-hydrophobic.
I got two
largemouth
on a Stanley
Ribbit frog,
in a color
called
Catalpa,
like the
tree.
Both hits
were on the
surface, as
I did
"twitch-twitch-slow,
twitch-twitch-slow/pause"
(sounds like
a dance
step).
Mark yanks
one out of
the
broad-leaved
cattail,
while
batting away
territorial
redwings.
We saw
evidence of
nest
building
(cleared,
clean
substrate, circular
areas in the
shallows),
but none of
the fish
were caught
on beds via
sight
fishing.
Mark and I
got hits at
the exact
same time,
within
20-feet of
each other.
Mark caught
the larger
fish.
Mark was
listening to
Blinded When
I See You,
by Third Eye
Blind at the
time of his
catch.
Rebel says
"its getting
dark, the
frickin'
bats are
out and I
have not had
my Nutri-Max
dinner yet,
can we go
now?"
