Fishing Mattawoman Watershed 3/23/06 -
2nd Day of Spring Mark Burchick
 |
The boys had off
from Howard
County schools
today, so I took
part of the day
off too. Our
fishing day
started off
warm, going up
to 81-degrees.
We got some sun
on our faces,
but as the
afternoon went
on, we had brief
spurts of rain
and the
temperatures
dropped nearly
10-degrees. With
three men in the
small jon-boat
we had to adjust
how we cast, and
until we got in
sync, we had to
fetch a few
lures out of the
trees.
|
 |
We caught 12
largemouth
bass on the
day. One on
a YUM Dancin'
Eel, 3 on a
Blakemore
Roadrunner,
3 on a jig
with a Senko
creature
bait, 3 on a
Heddon Zara
Spook
Swayback and
2 on a Lucky
Craft Live
Sammy
topwater
lure. The
lures that
did not
produce were
an 'in-line'
Chatterbait,
Senko worm,
several
spinnerbaits,
a swimbait,
a Pop-R, and
a Sweet
Beaver. Mark
got things
going with
the Zara
Spook, with
two
fantastic
topwater
strikes! |
 |
Once I saw
how well
mark was
doing with
the Zara
Spook, I
tied on the
Lucky Craft
Live Sammy,
and got the
biggest fish
on the day. |
 |
This
pre-spawn
female, came
in at
4.8-pounds,
and fought
valiantly
all the way
back to the
boat.
Nothing
beats a
top-water
strike. |
 |
She
committed
right at the
weed line,
on my second
twitch of
'walk-the-dog.' |
 |
We tried a
few casts
from land,
up, under
and
alongside a
beaver dam,
but no
strikes. We
could tell
that at
least four
pair of
Canada geese
were looking
to find
nesting
sites, as
they were
pretty
irritated,
whenever we
got near. |
 |
Tulip poplar
is at bud
break, and
will begin
leafing out
soon. |
 |
Jeb worked a
Roadrunner
the most
today, and
we were half
expecting
that he
might land a
bluegill or
crappie, but
to no avail. |
 |
The jig with
creature bait,
and some
Mega-Strike
scent, not only
was productive,
but also got a
good few hits
that did not
result with a
hook set. |
 |
This bass
hit Mark's
Zara Spook,
just as the
lure touched
water. Mark
placed a
perfect cast
in between
an opening
of sweet
pepperbush,
in the mouth
of a small
stream, with
foamy water,
resulting in
a textbook
cast &
blast! |
 |
Red maple is
at peak
flower. |
 |
As we came
around a
bend I saw
the
silhouette
of a big
bird on a
limb. I cut
the electric
motor,
recognizing
that it was
a bald
eagle. I
grabbed the
camera,
zoomed out
all the way
and was able
to get him
in this
photo, just
coming off
of his
perch. You
can see both
the white
tail, yellow
beak and
white head
in this
photo, as he
is taking
off. |
