Mallard
Pair Bond Howard County, MD
Valentine's Day 5/14/07 Mark Burchick
A male and female
mallard, hang out
along Burchick's
creek. They amble
from ice patch to
ice patch, poking
the stream bank for
food. You can see
dirt and vegetation
on the ice of the
stream where they
have been searching.
The in-stream
feeding effort is
due to the
hard-packed, wet
snow and ice from
yesterday's storm
event, and the lack
of typical winter
food stuffs that are
temporarily covered.
As soon as the
weary mallards
saw me they took
off. A blue
heron was with
them, but he
took off while I
was slinking
toward them.
They looked like
wood ducks as
they got some
giddy-up and
negotiated
through the
trees.
