Kayak Fishing in Maryland
5/27/07
Mark Burchick

Just like today's Indianapolis 500, this afternoons fishing trip was cut short due to thunder, lightening and rain.  After a 45-minute drive, we got out on the water around 5:30 or 6:00 PM.  We had every intention of fishing till dark, assuming that our best fishing would come at sunset and on until about 8:30 or 9:00 PM.  But noooooo!

My wife Michelle and I enjoyed the brief afternoon with Tracy, Jimmy and Robert Herriotts.  The Herriotts family recently purchased a kayak for their father Tracy (left, the gray boat to match his hair), so now all the boys can recreate together.

( and yes Karen, they all had life vests )

Robert takes a nice bass from near the bank using a Storm plastic worm and 4/0 ot offset worm hook.

Tracy took photos, and caught Michelle and I, wrangling a few to the boat.

I caught five and Michelle caught three, in the hour of fishing before we had to high-tail it off the water.  Michelle got a big fish, probably a 5-pounder to the boat but lost it as she tried to elevate it from the water.  Having fished only a time or two previously, she was surprised at how aggressive bass fight when on the line.

Robert did a great job, methodically working the shoreline.
I know he would have taken a good few fish if the unexpected thunder storm did not hit.

These kayaks are great to stealthily get into shallow water and work the dense vegetation along the banks.  Everything they needed for a fishing adventure fit between their legs.  I think Jimmy had a boat load of snacks.  You know how teenage boys graze all day long.
