BURCHICK'S TRAP PRACTICE
II
With a
cease-fire on
the range, we
went for the
photo-op in
front of the AGC
Trap Range sign.
Don't tell
anyone, but last
year our 4-H
Club pressure
washed the sign,
and we
mistakenly blew
off the majority
of the
hand-carved
lettering. Our
intentions were
good.
LaDonna
worked the
Lincoln hand
thrower.
Trapper
ready. Pull.
I know just
what Amanda
was thinking
. . . "the
muzzle is
inserted on
the line of
flight, just
behind the
clay target.
The gun is
then
consciously
accelerated
through and
past the
target,
before
pulling the
trigger. It
is this
accelerating
passage past
the target
that results
in
sufficient
forward
allowance to
break the
target."
If we were
bird
hunting,
Duane would
have kept
the dog busy
with
retrieves!
I can hear
Amanda thinking
again . . .
"if I miss
behind, even by
a micro-second,
I can never hit
the target,
because the
target is flying
away from the
shot string. If
I miss in front,
even by a mile,
there is always
the chance that
the target and
shot string will
connect as the
target flies
toward the
pattern."
Michelle was
a great
example of
the
importance
of
follow-thru,
meaning
"to follow
the target
all the way
to the
ground."
The majority
of
Michelle's
hits came as
the clay was
descending
toward the
ground. I
have no
doubt that
when it
comes to a
terrestrial
hunt for
furry
critters,
Michelle
would be all
over it. A
couple more
practices
with quick
target
acquisition
and she will
be turning
jumping
rabbits into
a
powder-puff
of
dust/feathers.
